Summary

A modern-day Ohio woman and a seventeenth-century Scottish laird fall in love at first sight in a magical holiday romance by Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of The Chemistry of Love 。 Maren Kelly and her friend Penny may be lost in the Scottish Highlands, yes。 They may be caught in the blizzard of the century, sure。 But despite their dire straits, Maren is going to honor her ailing mother’s wish for them to experience all the magic, mystery, and whimsy Scotland has to offer, even if she freezes to death trying。 When they’re rescued by the dashing Duncan Campbell, who seems like he walked straight out of the seventeenth century, Maren is more than a wee bit bewildered。 Their shelter is Duncan’s castle in Highglen, a captivating village that feels somehow familiar…as does the laird himself。 Brimming with holiday cheer and friendly, boisterous family members, Highglen is a safe haven in the frigid winter storm。 Maybe it’s the carolers and the warm hearth―or Duncan’s comforting brogue and stolen kisses―but Maren feels as though she’s come home。 And in Duncan, she may have found her long-awaited soulmate。 But is this a miracle that could last a lifetime?

3。75 stars。 Cute little novella。

This novella was absolutely amazing! I’m so impressed with the amount of details the author was able to squeeze in in such a short amount of time。 This entire thing took me maybe 2 hours to read but it was completely fulfilling of my expectations。 I finished this feeling entirely at peace with the ending of the characters。

Absolutely dearly loved this。 I read it straight through in one evening。

Sobbing, gross sniffling, and I needed to go wash my glasses off in the 3rd act。 That EPILOGUE?? Is it sappy? Sure, but I’m all for it。 I would read the shit out of this if it was a series。

Happy Sighs!Such a magical Christmas story。 Brief as a novella must be, there was enough description to bring me in to their world and enough connection to fall in love with them。 Thank you, Sariah Wilson, for a joyfully sweet story。

This author can write a great book--this one missed the mark。 Read more like a rough draft to me。

Based on Brigadoon, this is a sweet Christmas read。 If you like insta love this is for you。 It is not my thing so this one fell a bit flat for me。 It is a great idea and I liked the story line。 Fun for Christmas。Clean with no religion。 Some kissing

#InstaLove #TimeTravel #Holiday #Novella #AudiobookI picked up this novella through Kindle Unlimited read & listen。 I was looking for something that I could listen to while I cleaned house for the holidays and finish quickly if I finished cleaning before the audiobook ended。 This was actually the perfect length for what I needed to accomplish today, and I finished the audiobook at just the right time。 This holiday standalone is written in first person from Maren's POV that ends with a HEA。Maren #InstaLove #TimeTravel #Holiday #Novella #AudiobookI picked up this novella through Kindle Unlimited read & listen。 I was looking for something that I could listen to while I cleaned house for the holidays and finish quickly if I finished cleaning before the audiobook ended。 This was actually the perfect length for what I needed to accomplish today, and I finished the audiobook at just the right time。 This holiday standalone is written in first person from Maren's POV that ends with a HEA。Maren is an admirable character。 I loved her relationship with her mother and her desire to be with her during her terminal diagnosis。 I loved how accepting she is of the time travel and of the people and custom s when she finds herself in 1647。 She falls fast for Duncan , and who can blame her? He is romantic, poetic, gorgeous, and a gentleman。 Basically, he is all that and a laird to boot。 I really enjoyed the blending of the customs from the two time periods over the holiday。 Though this is fairly clean, with only some stolen kisses and some hand holding, I did not miss the heat that is most of the books I read。 I think this is partially because I listened to it and steamy scenes can sometimes be awkward to listen to as opposed to reading them。 I would say the heat level of this was bout the same as a Hallmark movie-maybe a few more kisses。 The author did an excellent job of keeping me guessing as to how they could possibly end up together and how they would overcome the obstacles they faced。 The narrator, Paula Nederhorst, does a fantastic job bringing the story to life。 She managed to distinguish each character with a separate voice and it never felt weird when she spoke as a male character。 It was also fun to hear her go back and forth from a Scottish to an American accent throughout the book。 She made it seem effortless and I was completely engaged。 Fun and light with a sweet HEA, I would certainly recommend this audiobook for a holiday read。 。。。more

Um, I really wanted to like this short-ish tale。 I'm a big fat fan of "Brigadoon" as well (the author is too)。 I just didn't end up enjoying it。 Um, I really wanted to like this short-ish tale。 I'm a big fat fan of "Brigadoon" as well (the author is too)。 I just didn't end up enjoying it。 。。。more

So…。I haven’t read or watched Highlander 🙈 …。but this book seriously makes me reconsider!!I loved this swoony, cozy, and festive 'time traveling' story! It has a creative and different take on time travel (but I don't want to reveal too much)。 The story is filled with sweet family bonds and friendship, festive and old traditions, and sweet romance。 I loved the descriptive scenes of the village and the family, I could definitely imagine how it all looked。 The MCs are really adorable together! Although it's absolutely insta love, I do think it was done really well! Duncan is wonderful book boyfriend material; he is kind to his clan, a caring big brother, and head over heels for Maren。 He's romantic and chivalrous。 And he is not too shy to say and show how he feels。Some words are written in the Scottish language, I needed to get used to it a little bit, but it made it more authentic and also created cute moments。It is absolutely an adorable comfort read! It's not only fluffy, there are also some emotional moments that add depth to the story。 I really loved it! ----------------------I received an e-arc from the author! It didn't influence my review, this is my personal opinion。 。。。more

I was excited to read Almost Like Being in Love。 This book appealed to me for many reasons。 I love a good Christmas Romance, I've always loved the movie Brigadoon, and I love any book or movie that has to do with Time Travel。Maren and her friend Penny get lost in the Scottish Highlands in a bad winter storm。 What happens next is absolutely magical。 It's at this point in the story that you need to enjoy the story for what it is。 They are found by the Campbell family who take them to their castle, I was excited to read Almost Like Being in Love。 This book appealed to me for many reasons。 I love a good Christmas Romance, I've always loved the movie Brigadoon, and I love any book or movie that has to do with Time Travel。Maren and her friend Penny get lost in the Scottish Highlands in a bad winter storm。 What happens next is absolutely magical。 It's at this point in the story that you need to enjoy the story for what it is。 They are found by the Campbell family who take them to their castle, Highglen。 Soon Maren finds out that this village and its people are from the 17th century。 She also finds out she is instantly attracted to Duncan Campbell and he to her。 The problem is, that the village only appears in certain years。 If Maren decides to leave, she may never get back to Duncan because they never know when people from the outside will be able to find the village。This novella is full of sweet romance, has magic, and Insta-Love。 Maren and Duncan feel as if they have found their soulmates。 Since this is a novella which is shorter than a regular novel, things do happen more quickly romance-wise。 I do love both Maren and Duncan and the Campbell family。 Readers are swept up in the magic of 17th Century Scotland and its people just as Maren does in the book。This fun little novella will make you smile, maybe cry a few tears, and help you believe in true love。 If you want a short story that will sweep you away for an afternoon, Almost Like Being in Love is waiting to take you on a magical adventure into the Scottish Highlands。 。。。more

DNF。 I can’t even with this book。 Here are my main issues:1。 I cannot get over the time aspect。 I’m totally fine believing there is some magical castle that exists beyond time somehow or which is on a different timeline。 The thing I can’t get over is that an American in 2023 makes her way to this castle and understands and is understood by 17th century Scots。 I don’t even understand modern day Scots!2。 Pretty sure women’s rights weren’t a thing back then。 And they wouldn’t treat two random women DNF。 I can’t even with this book。 Here are my main issues:1。 I cannot get over the time aspect。 I’m totally fine believing there is some magical castle that exists beyond time somehow or which is on a different timeline。 The thing I can’t get over is that an American in 2023 makes her way to this castle and understands and is understood by 17th century Scots。 I don’t even understand modern day Scots!2。 Pretty sure women’s rights weren’t a thing back then。 And they wouldn’t treat two random women who were lost and inappropriately-for-the-time dresses women well。 3。 Maren meets her uncle who has been gone for 25 years (so since 1998 if this book takes place in the year it’s published or earlier if it is not) and the first thing he mentions upon seeing her phone is how he was excited to get his BlackBerry。 I did a quick internet search and found that the BlackBerry did not come out until 1999 and wasn’t widely used until 2009。 4。 The insta-love。 How I hate insta love。 Our MCs have known each other for a few hours and he misses her。 Then she says she loves it when he says her name。 And she narrates that he is the most romantic man she’s ever met! He says some pretty words to her and now he’s the most romantic person ever。 😂So for those reasons I just can’t bring myself to finish this book。 Maybe things turn out better, maybe it’s explained that she hit her head in the storm and this is all a dream, maybe we find out this takes place in the future when everyone speaks olde Scottish。 Dunno and don’t care! 。。。more

loved loved lovedThis is the best Christmas story of 2023 and maybe 2022! So much fun to believe the possibilities。 We should each have a Duncan!

I think you have to know the musical Brigadoon to appreciate this book and not think it’s too cheesy。 😬

This was a fantastical story about believing in the magic of Christmas and the power of true love。Maren and Duncan fell in love with each other at first sight, but the clock was ticking, so they made the most of their time together。 Duncan was so effusive when it came to her, expressing himself in a way that left me swooning 😍 Him being a handsome Scot definitely helped 🤭I loved the mix of old and new, seeing how the people navigated the 16th century whilst also not being confused by the wonders This was a fantastical story about believing in the magic of Christmas and the power of true love。Maren and Duncan fell in love with each other at first sight, but the clock was ticking, so they made the most of their time together。 Duncan was so effusive when it came to her, expressing himself in a way that left me swooning 😍 Him being a handsome Scot definitely helped 🤭I loved the mix of old and new, seeing how the people navigated the 16th century whilst also not being confused by the wonders of the modern world。And the traditions! There were quite a number but oh so interesting to learn about。 This was definitely a refreshing view of Christmas and how it's celebrated by a different culture。Finally, what was definitely the main point was how abundantly the people loved each other and embraced the magic of true love。 So good!Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This was such a sweet, fun, christmassy read! It was very magical and fanciful and something about the Scottish culture always feels like a perfect Christmas setting。 This was certainly the best way to get into the Christmas reading season, and was a perfect holiday season read! If you are looking to get a couple more books in this year, this was a great, quick read! FYI-- This was a closed door romance, which I love!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and This was such a sweet, fun, christmassy read! This is probably closer to 3。5 stars but I rounded up for the ending。 I thought this was a fun quick read。 I enjoyed the time slip and nod to the movie Brigadoon。

3。5 starsA re-telling of Brigadoon* with hints of Outlander。 I thought the story was fun and festive。 But I was really disappointed in Wilson's handling of the insta-love。 Yes, that's a necessary part of the story, but Wilson set it up in such a way that I didn't really believe it and was therefore not particularly invested in the romantic relationship。*Including a Brigadoon song title as the title of the book。 3。5 starsA re-telling of Brigadoon* with hints of Outlander。 I thought the story was fun and festive。 But I was really disappointed in Wilson's handling of the insta-love。 Yes, that's a necessary part of the story, but Wilson set it up in such a way that I didn't really believe it and was therefore not particularly invested in the romantic relationship。*Including a Brigadoon song title as the title of the book。 。。。more

Thanks to Montlake for the ARC via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion。 I have been meaning to read this author and jumped at the chance to review an early copy of this novella。 I hope readers will connect with this book more than I did! I definitely should have read the description a bit more before going for it… This is an insta-love romance between a modern female and a Scottish lord from the seventeenth century。 I’m not a fan of insta-love, nor am I a fan of historical romance。 I’m u Thanks to Montlake for the ARC via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion。 I have been meaning to read this author and jumped at the chance to review an early copy of this novella。 I hope readers will connect with this book more than I did!
